    • Bhaktivedanta Academy Newsletter - November 2009 - 2009-12-07

I am pleased to present the inaugural issue of the Bhaktivedanta Academy newsletter for the 2009-2010 school year.

By the grace of the Lord we saw all of the fundraising efforts of the prior school year come to fruition when we opened up our new Audarya Bhavan classroom to students on August 24th. This new classroom space is a significant improvement: a cramped dark space has been transformed into a spacious and vibrant learning environment. As a bonus, this new building gave us the facility to establish a multi-use room that is being well utilized for reading instruction, meetings, and other uses. Thank you to everyone who stepped forward to ensure that the new Audarya Bhavan classroom was ready to receive students on the first day of school. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together to achieve a worthwhile goal.

    • ISKCON Studies Journal - 2009-09-05

      by Lal Krishna Dasa
After a lot of hard work, the first issue of the ISKCON Studies Journal is now available.
The ISJ is one of the main activities of the ISKCON Studies Institute (www.iskconstudies.org). The idea is that issues will link in to our conferences. Hence, volume two should feature articles from the "Guru: Person, Position, Possibilities” conference in July http://iskconstudies.org/?p=84
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. This issue is full of excellent articles by some of the best scholars in the field of ISKCON Studies. Harvard’s Francis Clooney, William and Mary College’s Ravi Gupta, ISKCON Resolve’s Braja Bihari Dasa, to name a few.
Accessibility is a key concern so all articles are available on the web at www.iskconstudies.org/?page_id=111 However you can also buy hard copies or pdf of the Journal by here - www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/iskcon-studies-journal-vol-one/7177830
Many thanks to all who have made this issue possible – the editors, the authors, and the ISKCON Studies Editorial Board.

With senior Vaisnavas like Bhakti Caru Swami, Jayadvaita Swami, Lokanath Swami, Bhanu Swami, Bhakti Vijnana Goswami, Hari Sauri Dasa, and Kadamba Kanana Swami teaching the men and

Greetings from Sri Vrindavan Dham. We hope this newsletter finds you in good health and blissful Krishna consciousness.

Congratulations to the BGIS swim team - the Blue Dolphins - who once again put on a great show at the Mathura District Swimming Championships. 9 out of 10 of our students who participated won medals.
The Best Swimmer Trophy was awarded to BGIS student Gagan Puri of Grade 7. He won 2 gold and 1 silver medal. Gagan has been at the school for five years. His family Guru chose BGIS to prepare Gagan for his future as a sannyasi leader (see profile below).  May he lead and inspire all to swim across the ocean
of material suffering and attain the shelter of Krishna.
In an interesting twist of fate, 3 former swimmers of BGIS, now in Amarnath School in Mathura, were competing against us. It was hard to know who to cheer for!

    • Bhaktivedanta Academy - Alachua - 2009-04-25

Recently, I was asked by a young parent if I had any ideas for her regarding raising a happy, responsible, Krsna conscious child. Reflecting back to the late 70’s and 80’s when my own three children were young, I thought about the essence of my own experience as a parent. Of course, things have changed and most devotee parents today do not live and work at the temple like we did. In many families, both the husband and wife must work outside the home in order to make ends meet. By the end of the day, most admit they have little time or energy left to devote to their children. At best, they try to ask them about their day and, those who are able to, eat a family meal together. So how do we perform our Krsna Conscious duty and still balance our everyday lives? If you weren’t lucky enough to grow up in Krsna consciousness, you may remember trying hard to enjoy (bhoga) on the weekend after trying hard to study (tyaga) during the week. At the Mayapur Institute, the pleasure of bhakti-rasa,devotional service to Krsna, never ends; only the pace changes. After intensely worshiping the Lord by their intelligence (Bg.18.70) during the week, the students take the weekend to relax on* parikrama*–or right on the MI courtyard grass.

I am still awed by the amount of determination, patience, talent, and professionalism that our staff and students demonstrated to put on 3 wonderful performances for the pleasure of the New Raman Reti devotee community. I am a bit biased, but I came away from the recent festival feeling that our children's presence was a major highlight of the festivities. I want to extend a special thank you to Kaliyapani for giving many hours of his time to direct the Madhurya Bhavan student's performance.

    • Bhakti Sastri Course in Poland - 2008-07-13

Teaching is a privilege as well as responsibility. Srila Prabhupada, as he himself said, did fifty percent of the work of introducing Krsna consciousness in the world. The remaining half  is to be introduced through, among other ways, various forms of education.
Educational programs for devotees are the basis of spiritual education. Introductory Courses in Krsna Consciousness and the Bhakti Sastri Course form the basis of proper understanding of  Srila Prabhupada’s message. To read a book is one thing, but to study it is another. With these reflections, Bhaktavasa Govinda Dasa launched the Bhakti Sastri Course in Poland last year.  The plan is to first train a group of qualified teachers, and then start courses, as a part of the educational effort of the Polish Yatra.

    • Interview with Laxmimoni Dasi, the Dean of Students at Bhaktivedanta College - 2008-06-29

Q: What you were doing before coming to the college?
For twenty-nine years I was the Principal of the Vaishnava Academy for Girls, in America. I was also involved in ISKCON education on other levels, as a child-protection advocate, a trainer, and a judge and as a member of ISKCON's Ministry for Educational Development.

Q: What inspired you to serve as the Dean of Students?
One reason is that I am inspired by the team of wonderful devotees developing the college and training the students. Another is that I am inclined to remain connected to ISKCON's educational development. The process of education is the backbone of ISKCON, on all levels, and I have always felt that whatever little good thing I can do becomes many times more valuable if I teach many others to do it.

    • Good Time for Getting Mercy in Mayapur - Enhanced Bhakti-sastri Curriculum - 2008-05-25

If you are meditating on improving your spiritual life, increasing your contribution to Srila Prabhupada's movement, or are unsure how to pass the tests Krishna is giving you, then please consider taking Srila Prabhupada's powerful darshan in Sridham Mayapur.
Srila Prabhupada's darshan that we are referring to here is in his books and more specifically in his "personal ecstasies" within his Bhaktivedanta purports. The power of this darshan will be fully experienced in the sanga of advanced Vaisnavas this coming November when the Mayapur Institute for Higher Education and Training will launch newly re-designed VTE Bhakti-sastri and VTE Bhaktivaibhava Courses. Senior ISKCON educators predict these courses will revolutionize sastric study in our movement.
A team of senior devotees will facilitate these courses sharing their realizations in an interactive format designed to empower devotees as preachers, leaders, and lifetime servants of ISKCON.
These courses begin on Bhisma Pancaka (November 9, 2008), enabling devotees, during the last five days of Kartika, to get credit for their austerities as if they had performed them for the entire caturmasya.

    • Krishna and His Cows - by BGIS students - 2008-04-19

I like cows because they play with us. We should respect cows because they are very important to us. So many people beat or kill them. We should stop them from doing this because cows are our own mothers.
The cows sleep for one or two hours a day. One Sunday I went to goshala. I saw a bull named Krishna eating two buckets of food in five minutes. Some cows were playing with Krishna. When the big bull Krishna came to me I ran away from there. There was another cow there named Pushpa - we took her blessings. When we were giving leaves to the cows all the cows came to us. And some cows were recovering from sickness. I like cows because they are very cute. Cows are important because they give us pure milk. We should respect cows because they never hurt us.
