In 1985, when I embarked on my homeschooling journey in the Washington DC/MD area I found support to be limited as I searched for like minded folks. At that time the local Christian homeschooling community was strong in numbers but my inclusive philosophical and spiritual view just didn’t match theirs. Therefore I continued on a quest to find my like minded home school community, which I personally found in The Learning Community International.
Support is very important as one embarks on this journey, although I must say it’s much easier now than it was 20+ years ago. We really had a deep passion and pioneer sprit back then (just like the HK movement) and currently families look for support from the trail blazers. Fortunately, for me and the consultants with TLCI, who have such a passion for empowering individuals to discover paths of living and learning that support them in realizing their highest potential, women continue to choose homeschooling as an alternative education option for their children.
With the support and guidance of The Learning Community International www.tlci.us I have successfully homeschooled all three of my children kindergarten through high school. My oldest daughter has graduated college and my younger son and daughter are currently enrolled in college studies. I am very familiar with the needs of devotee families and children and I am convinced that The Learning Community International has the kind of flexibility and personal professional services to meet the needs of the ISKCON community, families and students.
I am very interested in offering The Learning Community International services to the Iskcon community at large in the area of homeschooling needs and institution services.
The Learning Community International (TLCI) is a United States private accredited school established in 1984. I began using TLCI’s services in 1987 and have worked with TLCI as a consultant since 1993 assisting families in meeting their education needs and realizing their career goals. Currently I am TLCI’s Associate Director as well as Director of TLCI’s International Distance Program.
The Learning Community International consultants work individually with families and students in a homeschooling relationship. TLCI also works with schools around the world in an affiliate school relationship to offer services to K-8 students as well as high school students who will graduate with a US high school diploma. We have personal, professional services to offer devotee families and schools: testing, tutoring, curriculum, consultation, diplomas and more. With enrollment TLCI includes, eTAP, a dynamic electronic curriculum (US standards) specifically designed with “Discovery Videos” streaming through out while aligned strategically with the subject matter and at the appropriate grade level, which is fast becoming the international standard. While using the eTAP (www.etap.org free demo) curriculum as an educational anchor, TLCI also assigns consultants to families who will assist them in designing an “individualize learning plan” ILP
that best suits learning styles, interests and goals of the students.
Upon enrollment TLCI consultants will engage in thorough discussions with students and parents to identify the individuals propensities, interest and direction of life. At that time they will then begin to design a learning program that echoes their personal ideals and needs. Throughout the year there are regular scheduled contacts between TLCI consultant, family, and student to
ensure that the ILP is successfully in place. TLCI consultants also will continue to offer support, suggestions and resource guidance to families throughout the year. TLCI keeps all school records in compliance with local laws. Because of TLCI’s flexibility and regular personal contact any needed adjustments to individual learning programs can be made immediately.Among the many values that The Learning Community International can offer is a United States high school diploma. Being a private accredited school with ” individualized learning plans”, we can offer credits for devotional life studies as well as secular studies. Students official transcripts can reflect real “living is learning” including students less academic interests and passions (deity worship, cow protection, cooking, Sanskrit and shastra studies, art, rock and roll history, Indian Goddess studies, natural herbal studies, midwifery, skateboarding, organic gardening, astrology… you name it) right along with traditional courses: math, science, language arts, history. Our consultants are trained in guiding and designing ILP curricula that best fit the direction and interest of the students. TLCI’s flexibility also allows for a variety of approaches in traditional academic
course: obtaining History credits through Mahabharata; Science credit through books like Forbidden Archeology etc.
One of the specialties of TLCI is to assist families in the empowerment of learners to find their own personal path of success. Their success may or may not look like a Harvard PhD. It might be a small business or restaurant owner. It might be a degree in fine arts which supports the designing of deity clothes as well as costumes for the stage..maybe a writer, a cartoonist, a teacher or truck diver or microbiologist…success could be a very educated homeschooling Mom dedicated to facilitating her children and contributing to her spiritual community while supporting others. We work with students to get in touch with their very essence and encourage the emergence of the spirit which move and motivates the.
