MissionEmpowering learners to create and achieve their educational goals through a customized and collaborative process of reflection, self-evaluation, and self-correction. Our core beliefs include: • The active process of significant learning • The success of our learners and our parent-teachers is our first priority. • Partnerships among learners, parents and the TLCI team are integral to learner success. • We value respect for ourselves and others. • All learners deserve a positive and supportive environment. • We hold high expectations for learners, parents and ourselves. • We encourage and facilitate lifelong learning. • Customizing learning facilitates individuals in reaching their highest potential. • Including parents and TLCI team members in our mission of empowerment. We are passionate about inspiring and nurturing individuals to honor their natural thirst for learning. We believe that by providing individuals with a customized, creative, and inspiring program of learning tailored to their needs, interests and goals, the learner’s intrinsic motivation will awaken with a personal awareness, a love of learning, and a belief in themselves. Education is not a collection of knowledge handed down from teachers to students, nor a race to finish a book, or simply memorizing facts and figures. The process of significant learning is an active process in which the learner is the protagonist. This type of learning contrasts with rote learning, which is a more passive procedure. Active learning is a conscious process of adding and adapting new information to our previous knowledge Becoming expert questioners, reflective critical thinkers, and self-aware persons, individuals are equipped with the skills to make wise choices on the journey to create a successful life. We are committed to remaining a unique private school where each learner and parent-teacher receives individualized care from our dedicated, highly specialized collaborative team.
ActivitiesThe academic classroom is not the only place important life learning takes place. Unfortunately, traditional schools give academic credit only for learning completed within their four walls. TLCI’s picks up where traditional public and private school programs leave off. We encourage creativity and playfulness, custom design courses, offering credit for exploration, and creative learning experiences while using the whole world as the classroom: • Cultural and social pursuits; skills learned through scouting, and youth group activities • Entrepreneurial activities such as website design, lawn service, and photography • Learning a musical instrument, performances and art related activities • Internships, seminars and work experience gained in part-time jobs • Self-directed learning, certifications and mentorship • Integrate math into physical activities • Sports, soccer, fencing, equine learners • Cross-curricular learning through play • Self-taught skills such as bike repair, blacksmithing, and computer skill development • Travel and exploration • Book clubs and reading games Program flexibility is supported by an advisor led system of ongoing communication, regular schedule video conferences, and a reflective journal between learners, parent-teachers and their advisors. The advisor provides critical feedback empowering parents and learners to self-evaluate and make corrections to the plan wherever it might be needed. The advisor feedback to regular reflections helps with the approach and implementation of the learner’s program and assists older learners grasp subject matter resulting in confidence that opens them to pursue greater challenges. Our process enriches their learning experiences well beyond the scope and pace of the traditional classroom while maximizing competency and mastery of all subjects.
